Here's just the head after I pulled out the eyes and shaved off the little black plastic tab on the back.
A close up of where I used my dremel to shave out the plastic that was behind the eyes. I left a ledge around the eye socket so there would be a place to re-glue the eyes back on.

Here's just a shot of the inside of the head. I have no idea what that glob of glue is for.
Here I started feathering with long large "wing" feathers. |
I dragged the little trails of hot glue up and around the neck piece to keep them from getting all over the feathers. I then just pulled them off when I was done...

Some shots of him finished. I see I need to do some touching up around his face. I opted to leave the area around his eyes alone. (mostly because I was so dang sick of gluing on feathers). Also, he looks a little fuzzy because I let some of the downy feathers show through. It would have taken me months if I tried to cover him with only the tips of the feather showing...

Here I stuffed his head with some Christmas lights. I have a strand of 25 (battery powered) coming in the mail. Just wanted to show it glowing for the pictures. The lights do need to be adjusted so they light evenly in both eyes. Note: I've decided to use one white LED that I found from the floralite website instead of the bulky Christmas lights.. The floralites twist on, so I just glued one to the inside of the owls head and twist the top "on" while I'm using the owl. Twist off when I'm not. (Any chance I get to avoid electricity, I take! I hate extension cords)

Another shot of him in the dark...Sorry, my camera doesn't work well in low-light. I'm also keeping an eye out for a Christmas tree turner so I can get his head to rotate, but for now his head does "bob" in the wind and he's totally portable so I think he's okay without it too.

Here is a close-up of the submersible LED I used in the head. Each one comes with two batteries inside. They are very small and easy to use. Not bad at $2.25 each!
Just a shot of where I glued the LED.
I tried both the orange LED and the white one. The orange one was really neat, but it didn't show up nearly as well as the white.

The graveyard mp3 that I got from FrightFX has an owl hooting in it from time to time so it will be perfect.
| Northern link |
I've seen the Rotating Head Owl anywhere from $19.99 to $33.00. Northern Tool has the one for twenty bucks. (These work great as they can be filled with water or sand to keep them from blowing over)

| Motion sensitive Owl |
I just found this owl on the net too. Motion sensor has it turn it's head in the direction of sound/movement and make a great horned owl sound. Not sure if that's a hoot or a screech. These will be available after June 06. Would be much better prop than a static owl, I think...
